2 Product Summary

This software provides PPD files for Common UNIX Print System (CUPS).
This applies to the following SEIKO EPSON Laser Printers supported by GS-LPD (ver. 3.4.1).

	  For a list of supported models, please refer to "4.2 Settings from the Command Line"


3 How to Install

Assume that you use Redhat9.

(1).... Install with a tgz file
Copy the uncompressed file to the target directory.

  STEP 1
  Uncompress eplaser-cups-ppd-3.4.1.tgz in an appropriate directory.
  # tar zxvf eplaser-cups-ppd-3.4.1.tgz

  STEP 2
  Copy (overwrite) the file to the following directory.

  # cp -a eplaser /usr/share/cups/model/

(2).... Switch your print system to CUPS
If you do not use CUPS as a print system, execute the steps below.

  # /usr/sbin/alternatives --config print

  --------------------
  There are 2 programs which provide 'print'.

    Selection    Command

  *  1           /usr/bin/lpr.cups
   + 2           /usr/bin/lpr.LPRng

Enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number: 1

(3).... Starting CUPS
If CUPS is already running on your system, restart it with the folllowing command

  # /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups restart

If it is not, start CUPS with

  # /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups start


4 Printer Settings

4.1 Setting from the CUPS Setup Tool

  STEP 1
  Access to the following website from a web browser you use.
  URL http://localhost:631

  STEP 2
  Click "Manage Printers", then click the "Add Printer" button to add a printer.

  STEP 3
  Enter a printer setting name, and click the "Continue" button.
  Specify other setting items if required.

  STEP 4
  Select an output device from "Device", and click the "Continue" button.

  STEP 5
  Select EPSON form "Make", and click the "Continue" button.

  STEP 6
  Select a target driver you want to use from "Model", and click the "Continue" button. 
  The installed PPD is displayed as follows:
  Example: Epson EPL-6100, Foomatic + epl6100(en)
           Epson AcuLaser C8600, Foomatic + alc8600(en)

  STEP 7
  To change the printer settings, click the "Configure Printer" button.
  The following setting items are available:
  Example: Number of Copies:
           Orientation:
           Resolution:
           RIT Control:
           Sheet Feeder:
           Toner Density:
           Double-Sided Printing:
           Media Type:
           Output Order:
           Page Size:
           Paper Source:


4.2 Settings from the Command Line

  STEP 1
  Executing the lpadmin (configure cups printers and classes) command adds a printer.
  # /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p EPL6100 -E -v parallel:/dev/lp0 \
              -m eplaser/Epson-EPL-6100-epl6100-cups.ppd.gz
  Options:    -p Specifies a printer setting name
              -E Enables a printer
              -v Specifies a target output device
              -m Specifies a PPD file
 		       The following PPD files are available:
		       -EPL-5800	Epson-EPL-5800-epl5800-cups.ppd.gz
		       -EPL-5800PS	Epson-EPL-5800PS-epl5800-cups.ppd.gz
		       -EPL-5900	Epson-EPL-5900-epl5900-cups.ppd.gz
		       -EPL-5900PS	Epson-EPL-5900PS-epl5900-cups.ppd.gz
		       -EPL-6100	Epson-EPL-6100-epl6100-cups.ppd.gz

  To confirm your printer status, execute the lpstat (print cups status information) command.
  # lpstat -p


  STEP 2
  Executing the lpoptions (display or set printer options and defaults) command changes the printer settings.


  To confirm the printer options and current settings, execute the following:
  # lpoptions -p EPL6100 -l
  Options:    -p Specifies a printer setting name
              -l  Lists the printer specific options and their current settings.
      Display examples: *:current setting
      Copies/Number of Copies: *1 ... 999
      Landscape/Orientation: True *False
      Resolution/Resolution: 300 *600 1200
      RITOff/RIT Control: True *False
      Manual/Sheet Feeder: *False True
      TonerSaving/Toner Density: *False True
      MediaType/Media Type: *Plain Thick Trans
      Collate/Output Order: True *False

  An example when setting Resolution to 1200 dpi, and setting Paper Source to Tray 1:
  # lpoptions -p EPL6100 -o Resolution=1200 -o InputSlot=Tary2


5 How to Print

To print, execute the lpr or lp command.

$ lpr -P EPL6100 <file>
$ lp  -d EPL6100 <file>

To set an option when printing, specify it as examples below, as well as lpoptions.

$ lpr -P EPL6100 -o Resolution=1200 -o InputSlot=Tary1 <file>
$ lp  -d EPL6100 -o Resolution=1200 -o InputSlot=Tary2 <file>
