An extended version of the plain TeX format, adding support for bibliographies, tables of contents, enumerated lists, verbatim input of files, numbered equations, tables, two-column output, footnotes, hyperlinks in PDF output and commutative diagrams. Eplain can also load some of the more useful LaTeX packages, notably graphics, graphicx (an extended version of graphics), color, autopict (a package instance of the LaTeX picture code), psfrag, and url.

Binary packages can be installed with the high-level tool pkgin (which can be installed with pkg_add) or pkg_add(1) (installed by default). The NetBSD packages collection is also designed to permit easy installation from source.
The pkg_admin audit command locates any installed package which has been mentioned in security advisories as having vulnerabilities.
